Pert vs Gantt

Bottom line: Which one is better?

Bottom line: Gantt chart is better.

In this review of Pert vs Gantt, Gantt chart is better as it acts as a means of communication that replaces meetings and enhances other status updates, provides accurate time duration and percent complete, are straightforward and are not made for projects which need changes.

What is a PERT chart?

PERT stands for Program Evaluation and Review Technique and was introduced by the United States Navy in 1950s and is basically a project management tool used to plan tasks within a project for easier scheduling and coordinating team members finishing the work.it deals with  simplifying the planning and scheduling of large as well as complex projects.

What is a Gantt chart?

Gantt is a graphical depiction for planning and scheduling projects. It basically breaks a project into smaller pieces of tasks with each spread out over time.

Differences between Gantt chart vs chart

The following are main differences when we compare PERT chart vs Gantt chart;

Gantt is represented with bar chart whereas PERT is represented with flowchart (for network diagram)

Gantt is mused for small projects while PERT is used for large and complex projects.

Gantt provides accurate time duration and percent complete while with PERT you need to predict time.

Gantt cannot display interconnecting tasks that depends on each other while PERT has numerous interconnecting networks of independent tasks

Gantt chart was first developed and introduced Gantt by Charles Gantt in 1917 whereas PERT were developed and introduced in 1950 by the U.S. Navy.

Gantt charts can be created using specific project management software such as Smartsheet while PERT chart can be made with Smart Draw.

Gantt charts focus on the time required to complete a task whereas PERT chart focuses on intertask relationships.

Gantt chart

Advantages

Clarity; stakeholders in the entire organization can easily understand where teams are in a process as they consider ways in which independent elements link up for the purpose of completing the project.

Communication; Gantt charts are used as a means of communication in place of meetings for status update.

Motivation; Gantt charts act as a form of external motivation to team members.

It creates a picture of complexity; ideas and communication in the organization are represented in form charts or pictures.

It organizes thoughts; complex thoughts are divided into component parts

It brings organization; when you present every idea in form of a chart in an organised manner with all high level tasks properly organized and the resources allocated to the tasks, it brings organization and speaks volumes.

It is essential in setting realistic time frames; Gantt charts have bars that indicate the period each task will be completed meaning that all things are set in the right time frame.

It is highly visible; when a chart is placed where every member can see it, the members are automatically reminded of the objectives and the place the things are going to take place.

Disadvantages

They sometimes appear to become complex; there are sometimes large numbers of tasks to be undertaken as well as resources required for the project to be completed. Software like Mavelink, Wrike, Smartsheet and AceProject can deal with such complexity issues.

The bar size doesn’t indicate the amount of work; each bar that is on the chart shows the time period in which set of tasks are to be completed but when you look at the bar for a particular set of tasks, it is hard to tell the level of resources required to achieve the tasks.

They require frequent update; when you use the Gantt charts it is a must you change the chart frequently, failure to doing that it will be ignored.

PERT charts advantages

  1. a) They act as graphical representation of a project summarised into activities whereby the team members are able to see all the procedures required to complete each project. Each team member is also able to see the activities and responsibilities designated to him.
  2. b) They outline the relationships and dependencies between individual project activities so that the user can understand how the work flows.

Disadvantages

They are complicated; PERT charts can sometimes be complicated and confusing having several tasks and dependency relationships. The diagrams are expensive to develop, update and maintain.

Inaccuracies prediction; since PERT charts depend on the ability to predict precise time frames for several tasks, complicated projects that have many activities and suppliers makes the prediction a bit difficult.

Conclusion

Gantt chart is better  when we compare Gantt vs PERT as it acts as a means of communication that replaces meetings and enhances other status updates, provides accurate time duration and percent complete, are straightforward and are not made for projects which need changes.
